Why Should You See A Dermatologist? More Than Just Moles.

Have you ever wondered if you need to see a dermatologist? Most people automatically think about seeing this type of doctor if they have a questionable mole, or one that needs removal, but did you know that there are many reasons to see a dermatologist? Here are just a few.

Mole assessment or removal-While this may seem like the most common reason to see a dermatologist, it may also be one of the most important. Certain types of moles can be skin cancer or melanomas. If left untreated, melanoma can enter the bloodstream and spread quite quickly to other parts of the body. A dermatologist can help you to assess whether a mole needs to be removed and if it is cancerous.

Freckles, birth marks, and beauty marks. Even though these types of skin markings are not usually cancerous, it is a good idea to visit a dermatologist if you are prone to them. Because freckles and other markings are generally a sign of fair skin, it is important to see a dermatologist in order to assess your risk of sunburn and other cancer-causing factors.

Acne and blemishes-Many people have trouble with acne at some point in their lives. Teens, pregnant women, and young adults are particularly susceptible. However, not all cleansers or treatments are created equal. A dermatologist can help you to determine the best course of treatment and a plan of action that can help prevent future break outs.

Prolonged or recurring rashes. While you may not need to go to the doctor every time you get poison ivy, it is a good idea to visit a dermatologist if you have a rash that does not clear up on it's own or comes back quickly. Certain serious yet treatable diseases such as shingles and dermatitis herpetiformis, a form of Celiac disease, appear as a rash.

Other skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. These dry, itchy skin conditions can be miserable for people who have them. Fortunately, a dermatologist can help you find a treatment that is effective for your condition. Often, medications and dietary changes are very helpful in lessening the symptoms of these skin disorders.

Cosmetic procedures. Some dermatologists perform procedures like scar removal, laser hair removal, and permanent makeup and also offer follow-up for plastic surgery. These procedures are often done out-patient, or in a medical-spa setting.

A dermatologist is the best type of doctor for all of your skin care needs. Making a point to visit this skin specialist at least once a year is a great way to keep your skin looking and feeling great.
